Artist's Statement
Capece, born in New York, studied art at Parsons School of Design, Manhattan, with Giovanni Paganin, the futurist sculptor in Milan, Professor Domenico Annichiarico, Academia di Belle Arti, Carrara, and Maestro Massoni in Rome during the course of her dozen Italian years. In 2005, Heatherley School of Fine Art, London, offered Capece study towards a master's diploma.
Learning sculpture technique from experts, all work is approached in clay with mythological and allegorical figures that demonstrate emotion. Capece contributes this to training at Parsons and Italian life that brought time to observe and create. At her atelier in centro storico, she developed figurative collections of sculpture utilizing several foundries: Cavallari, whose artists included Cy Twombly; Mansuiti, foundry for the Vatican for small pieces, and in Pietrasanta, del Chiaro for lost wax casting into bronze.
Sculpture in marble from Carrara, Tuscany, Sicily and Portugal, Resin pieces, designed at the workshop of Romolo Felice, Rome, terracotta and metal conceptual art, paintings and works on paper comprise her varied portfolio.
Daniel Besseiche Gallery in France, Higgonet Gallery and the Cipriani in Venice have exhibited Capece sculpture. In London, commissions through the Chelsea Arts Club are a part of Capece's artistic life; her sculpture and paintings have been exhibited there; two sculptures are in the Club's permanent collection. While living in London, she was a guest artist for life drawing sessions at the Royal Academy.
Commissions and acquisitions include the Cafritz family of Washington, DC, Colonel Eugene Myers, (former director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art), Joe Hirshhorn, Hirshhorn Museum, don Jesus Mora del Rio, Spain, playwright Anthony Shaffer, London, Highgate Cemetery, London, Mme Bittan Evers, Sweden/San Francisco, Honorable Edgar Osgood, San Francisco, architect Theodore Brown, San Francisco, and the Sebag Montifiorie family, England.
Capece (who uses only her surname preferring art to have no gender) will have a retrospective of miniature sculpture June 2020 at Chelsea Arts Club, London. Her garden studio is in San Francisco and bronze foundry studio is Del Chiaro, Pietrasanta, Italy.
She has published three novels set in Italy that reflect art, has been a guest lecturer at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco speaking on Bernini and is currently engaged with fantasy animal paintings and sculpture for public space.
Capece works exclusively by commission only.
